No less than 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenship in 2022 alone, as the growing trend of Nigerians trying to relocate abroad has increased pressure on passport booklets in the country.
The Permanent Secretary.of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib Belgore, disclosed these while appearing with the Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, on the ministerial med.a briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday.
He said that this figure is against the 150 Nigerians who renounced their citizenship between 2006 and 2021.
The Minister of Interior asserted that the massive exodus of Nigerians out of the country in search of greener pastures was responsible for the high influx of people demanding passports. The Minister noted in 2022 alone, the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, issued the highest number of passport booklets in over seven years, totaling 1,899,683.
