Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun has condemned the disturbing incident where a Police team ran a vehicle over a citizen on June 29, 2023, at Ekpoma, Edo State.
Egbetokun directed the erring policemen, who have been in detention in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters Abuja on Monday for further action.
The IGP in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, also implored members of the public, particularly the people of Ekpoma, to remain calm as the present leadership of the NPF will not condone such an act of unprofessionalism and illegality.
Meanwhile the Edo state police command has equally condemned the action of some of its officers after a vehicle driven by its operatives ran over a man in handcuffs at Ekpoma, Esan West local government area of the state.
In a statement by the police public relations officer Chidi Nwabuzor, the disturbing video captured the victim lying on the ground underneath the front part of a Toyota Sienna car driven by the officers who were said to be on patrol.
Nwabuzor identified the victim as Success Ehimare who was claimed to have committed a driving offence in an unregistered car and had resisted attempts by officers to carry out their duties related to the vehicle.
Commissioner of police in the state, Muhammed Dankwara described the action of the officers as barbaric, inhumane and unprofessional, and therefore ordered the arrest of the police officers involved to be briefed and debriefed while investigation continued.
