As the ongoing strike action by parliamentary staff paralyses activities in state houses of Assembly over non-implementation of financial autonomy, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has thrown his weight behind agitations for electoral, financial, and administrative autonomy also in local government councils of Nigeria.

The Speaker, who was a guest at a function of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, in Abuja on Wednesday, says the ongoing constitution amendment by the National Assembly will accommodate genuine concerns of local councils and grassroots development areas.

The newly inaugurated president of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Ambali Olatunji says the union will pursue the establishment of a local government scheme of service as well as ensure the prompt resolution of all pending issues to put an end to all litigation concerning it.

A minute silence was observed in honour of the late president of NULGE, Ibrahim Khaleel who died in 2020.
