The Federal Ministry of Education has directed the closure of all Federal Government Colleges, FGCs, in Abuja following security threats on the unity colleges located in the FCT.
The Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, confirmed to newsmen in Abuja on Monday that the ministry had ordered the evacuation of students from the schools.
This directive is not unconnected with reports on Sunday night about gunshots around the Federal Government College, Kwali which is located along the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway.
Late Sunday evening, unconfirmed reports trended on social media indicating that there were heavy shootings in Federal Government Colleges (FGCs) Kwali, Abuja, and parents were rushing to the school to ascertain the safety of their children and possibly return home with them until calm is restored.
A senior staff of the Ministry admitted that the situation is not normal and that it could be because of the rising insecurity at the fringes of Abuja where the schools are located, and the need to secure the lives of the students that might have prompted the decision to shut the schools abruptly.
