FIRE GUTS A 4-STOREY BUILDING IN BALOGUN MARKET, LAGOS ISLAND.

Goods and properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed today as fire gutted a-4-storey building at the popular Balogun Market in Lagos Island.

A press statement by the Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the fire involved a four-storey building at No. 5, Gbajumo Street, Balogun Market, Lagos Island.

According to him, no casualty was recorded so far but the fire started in the wee hours of Thursday and was combated headlong before it came up again.

Although the exact cause of the fire is not clear, reports suggest that the inferno started from one of the shops of the textiles and shoe building. Firemen of the Federal and State fire service were on ground to battle the fire which appeared to have abated before it rekindled again at about 6 AM.

South West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA Ibrahim Farinloye, said there had been no record of loss of life.

He said:

Presently, the fire has been brought under total control. It has been contained without spreading to other buildings.

No injury or death has been noticed accessibility to the source of fire is still very difficult but it is confined to the source.
