Napoli coach, Gennaro Gattuso has heaped praise on Super Eagles forward and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, describing the club record signing and Africa’s most expensive player as “A young lad with the head of a 40-year old.”
The 21-year old Nigerian international came on in the 61st minute and immediately changed the rhythm of the game. Osimhen’s introduction was all that Napoli needed to overcome Parma two nil away in the Italian Serie A season opener. The game had experienced a cagey first half but Napoli benefited from two defensive errors by Parma but not without the pressure mounted by Napoli’s new signing who was making his Serie A debut for the club. Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Isigne got in on the scoresheet as Napoli kicked off the season on a perfect note.
After the match, Gattuso said,
I was struck by Osimhen’s serious attitude, he hasn’t forgotten where he came from and the sacrifices he’s made. He built himself up on his own and I congratulate him for his will and desire. He is a young lad with the head of a 40-year old, I hope he doesn’t make mistakes and doesn’t change his attitude.
A smattering of fans, wearing masks and widely spaced apart, watched the game at the Stadio Tardini in Parma, after the Italian government agreed to allow up to 1000 spectators at the matches on Sunday for the first time since the Covid 19 lock-down in early March. Napoli will next host Genoa this Sunday in the Italian Serie A.
