Bread makers under the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria have given the Federal Government a 2-week ultimatum to tackle the increasing prices of ingredients and reduction of taxes or they will be compelled to shut down operations across the country.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the National President of the Association, Mansur Umar said between January till date prices of baking ingredients, and NAFDAC registration have increased by 100 percent forcing 30 percent of their members to shut down business.
Mansur, noted that the association had several meetings with the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment as well as Labour four months ago but failed to address issues brought before them.
The association urged President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly intervene before it gets out of hand as shutting down of bakery business will deepen the security situation where over 20million Nigerians working under the association across the country may be laid off from their jobs.
It further explained that the ultimatum ends on September 23 as members will be instructed to carry out nationwide protests before proceeding to shut down the business.
