PRESIDENT BUHARI RETIRES THE ACTING CG OF NIGERIAN IMMIGRATION SERVICE, ISAH JERE

President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for the retirement of the acting Comptroller-general (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr. Isah Jere Idris.

Following the expiration of his initial one-year extension, as well as the concerns raised by several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), who advised the Presidency against considering Jere again.

The retirement notice is contained in a secret notification memo of one year tenure extension expiration addressed to Jere.

The memo, dated April 17, 2023 with code number CDCFIB/APPT.CG&DCG/61/VOL.IV/74 was signed by the secretary to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, Obasi Edozie Edmond, on the orders of the Board chairman, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who is the Minister of Interior.

Jere is by the retirement notice directed to hand over the duties and responsibilities of his office to the most senior officer in the Service, pending the appointment of a substantive CG of Immigration.

Jere has been the Acting Controller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service despite attaining retirement age.
The NIS boss, whose official retirement date was April 24, 2022 having attained the age of 60 as stipulated by civil service rules, continued to preside over the affairs of the agency for at least one more year.

The extended tenure will automatically elapse on April 24, 2023.
