President Muhammadu Buhari has directed operators in the power sector to commence nationwide mass-metering program to put a stop to estimated and arbitrary billing for electricity. He also approved a waiver of the import levy on meters, to enable early supply of meters at reasonable costs.
Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission James Momoh in a statement said tariff reviews will be based on service on service-based principles. Under the Service—based principles, DISCOS will only be able to review tariff rates for customers following consultation with customers, commit to increasing the number of hours of power supply per day and improved quality service.
In all, vulnerable Nigerians will not experience any increase. This means that unmetered customers will not experience any cost increase beyond what is chargeable to metered customers customers in the same area.
