Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa has taken his oath of office for his second term.

His Zanu-PF party won close to two-thirds of the parliamentary vote.

Regional leaders including South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa and Mozambique’s Filipe Nyusi witnessed the swearing-in by chief justice Luke Malaba.

Official results gave Mnangagwa close to 53% of the vote in a presidential election, which international observers said fell short of democratic standards.

Mnangagwa’s main rival Nelson Chamisa and his party, Citizens’ Coalition for Change rejected Mnangagwa’s election win as fraudulent but confirmed that it will not seek to overturn the presidential election result in court.

International observers’ harsh criticism of his election win is likely to hinder Mnangagwa’s plans for greater international re-engagement and an economic turn-around.
